The novel follows Leonard Lumière, an Australian scientist conducting genetic research in Buritaca, a Colombian fishing village. His work takes an unexpected turn when he meets Maria, a sixteen-year-old girl who claims to be divinely impregnated. As Leonard seeks rational explanations, the town becomes a focal point for both pilgrims and sceptics, drawn by Maria’s pregnancy and the pronouncements of a talking parrot named Gabriel.
